Technical FAQs

Q. Why can't I print out an entire large article in one step?

A. In order to make the pages an acceptable size for fast downloading we have to split articles into structured sections. This means that currently, printing a long article requires the user to print out separate sections at a time. We are working on a printer friendly version so that users can print out as much or as little of an article as they wish.

Q. When I print an article, why do I get 2 or 3 extra pages?

Grove Music Online uses frames to present the various navigation options, so simply clicking print will print the top frame, the side bar frame, and if viewing a search result, the next/previous frame, as well as the desired main text frame. To avoid this, PC users should right-mouse-click and Mac users Apple+mouse-click the main text frame and select 'Print' from the drop-down menu. In the print dialog box you will then have the option to 'Print only the selected frame'.

Q. How do I search for articles?

A. The search section of the full help notes which full instructions for the different kinds of searches available. Here you can ensure you are using the correct type of search for the sort of information you wish to find. If the article you are looking for does not appear when you use the search box in the top navigation bar, then try a full text search instead. If you are looking for a person then only type their surname in the article search box. If you are unsure of the spelling or there are a variety of different spellings then use the pattern search or a wildcard search.

Q. Some of the illustrations in articles appear to be missing

A. Displaying images online is subject to a different set of copyright issues to the print version. We have included any illustrations where we own the copyright or which have no copyright restrictions. We have also obtained a substantial number of permissions to display images online. To see what images are available for each article go to the Illustrations button and click on it. This will bring up a list of all the images we have permission to display for that article. For external links, click on the Links button.

Q. What if an image link does not work?

A. Once a link has gone down on the site we cannot change it automatically to make it live again. What we can do is correct or delete the link as necessary in the database which drives this feature and next time the site is updated that link will appear corrected. If you would like to let us know of any links you come across which need fixing we would be grateful. Please e-mail your report to the editor@grovemusic.com.

Q: Is the site disability compliant?

OUP and Grove Music Online's development team have always sought to address accessiblity issues and common compliance standards, and the site conforms to these standards in many important respects (e.g., font resizing, alt tags for all significant images, and readability for text-only browsers and text readers). We are however currently re-evaluating the site in view of the age of its present architecture, an architecture that predates many of the technical concerns of our market. The most obvious area for us to focus on is removing frames from the site while retaining the sort of navigation required for this type of product (e.g., navigating between articles, browsing search results). We welcome any feedback from users on other parts of the site which they may feel do not conform to accessibility and more general web-based standards.

Q. Is the site z39.50 compliant?

Grove Music Online is not Z39.50 compliant but it does support standard HTTP requests.

Headword searching

The following format will perform a search of article headwords only (e.g., article titles and subtitles):

http://www.grovemusic.com/shared/views/search_results.html?subview=search_subject&query=xxx

where 'xxx' is your query term. For example:

http://www.grovemusic.com/shared/views/search_results.html?subview=search_subject&query=piano+quartet+flute

returns all articles where either word appears in the title or subtitles.

Full-text searching

To search the full-text of the articles, use the following URL:

http://www.grovemusic.com/shared/views/search_results.html?subview=search_subject&query=piano+quartet+flute&query_type=boolean

This example also includes a parameter to set the query type to 'boolean', ensuring that the search returns only those articles where all words are mentioned. You can expand the search by changing this parameter to 'concept' (searches each word as a concept) or 'pattern' (searches each word against similar letter patterns). Note that both concept and pattern searches look for articles that contain any word in the query.

Q. Does the site use persistent URLs?

Yes, Grove Music Online uses a regular URL pattern where each article is identified by an id. For example:

http://www.grovemusic.com/shared/views/article.html?section=music.21643

will always take the user to the Grove Music Online Piano quartet article (id=21643).

Q. Can I use my Athens login with Grove Music Online?

Yes. Members of participating Athens institutions with a subscription to Grove Music Online can now use the Athens service on and off campus with their personal Athens username and password. Please go to the Athens log in page or use your MyAthens link. Grove Music Online is an Athens single sign-on (SSO) resource.

Q. How do I get accented characters to display properly?

A. Some users may experience problems displaying non-standard characters. There are some easy steps that can be taken to remedy this. If you find that you are still having problems then follow the instructions below which will allow you to download the necessary fonts.

Accents are not always displayed in search results. We do this so that the user does not have to enter accented characters in the search box. If you go to an entry and the headword does not display the correct accents then refresh the page by clicking on the article title at the top of the table of contents in the left-hand frame. In the majority of cases this should solve any display problems. However, if you are still experiencing problems please consult the Unicode information below.

Unicode
To handle a diverse range of characters the site uses the Unicode standard. To give it its full title, the Unicode Worldwide Character Standard is a character coding system designed to support the interchange, processing, and display of the written texts of the diverse languages of the modern world. In addition, it supports classical and historical texts of many written languages.Unfortunately this standard is not fully implemented across all browsers and platforms and the Grove Music Online site represents a compromise solution that displays as many characters as possible within the constraints of common operating systems, browsers and standard font installations. The default font used by Grove Music Online is Arial. Earlier versions of Windows 95 and the Mac OS have versions of Arial with a limited number of characters. For more information on unicode visit http://www.unicode.org.
